Hello and welcome. I am an artist living and working in Asheville, NC. My first career was as a Forest Ranger/Firefighter/Wilderness and Park Ranger. After years out in the field, I decided to become a mother (that funny thing that happens biologically happens when women reach their late 20's). To stay afloat and still be with my child, I set my botanical art off to the side and out of reach as I opened of my own in-home day care. Following self directed employment, I decided to work locally as a Newborn Nurse, but had no idea it would last several decades. Today, when I recall the care shared with over 10,000 families, I feel satisfied. I learned the art of effectively offering support and encouragement. A gift to have touched so many lives during a vulnerable time. In the medical world, I rose through the ranks, but at home my youngest daughter consumed my time with heart surgery after heart surgery. I exited hospital employment when I could no longer tolerate the avoidable injury inflicted on new families. Mission Hospital sold to HCA, and yes the ‘C’ stands for Corporation, $ in medicine, not thanks. I seem to be out of the wrong place at the right time, I served plenty, with 4,000 babies born annually.
Enter Third phase of life, moving ever toward becoming a working artist. I earned my Associate of Fine Arts in Visual Arts Degree, 40 years to the month from when I strolled across a similar stage at NC State University for my Forestry Degree! I love to dance. After being distracted by mud, and having produced two large commissions, I find my self completely enthralled with painting the nature world outdoors.
You can imagine the joy in this Ranger's heart … my two favorites in culmination of desire.
Remembering the strong body of my youth, and working to keep it fully functional, I took a job as a wellness coach at a boutique YMCA with the best views in Asheville, charging community, lifting weights and walking with people as they work toward their aspirations.
I love my time immersed in nature, walking and meditating, swimming in cold streams. When evening arrives, I usually make time to read, real books. I successfully escaped the internet social media addiction, just as Hurricane Helene was dying down, so I apologize but my instagram is no longer available. You can find my work at various arts events, in my home brimming with work, or here: https://lindakwelsh.myportfolio.com/work
